さて、表題書はユーフラテス・ティグリス河畔で展開した、先史時代ウバイド期からイスラムの登場までの約4000年に及ぶ文明の興亡を一望する。名前だけは何処かで見聞きした文明や王が登場しては、消えていく。何せ300ページ足らずで4000年分である。1時間の読書には向かないが、10分単位で集中せずに何かを読みたい場合、例えば乗り換えのある通勤時など、本書は上に挙げた2冊と同様にお勧めできる。
