不可能性には二種類ある。論理と理論に関わる話なのだが、深くは突っ込まない。例えば「1+1=3」は定義上、論理上で間違いという意味で不可能である。これを「第一種の（狭義の、または強い意味の）不可能性」と呼ぶ。一方、普段僕たちが「それは不可能だ」という場合、通常はもっと弱い意味で使っている。例えば分子の熱運動。分子一つであれば、ある時間の間ちょっとだけ上に移動するのは不可能ではない。二つが同時に上に移動するのも不可能ではない。だが机の上に静置した本が短時間でも上に浮かび上がるのは「不可能」である (古典的統計物理的な物質観で申し訳ない。僕は量子力学をあまり知らない)。その確率はあまりに低く、宇宙の年齢くらいの期間眺めても起こらないかもしれない。確率的に有り得ないという意味での不可能性を「第二種の不可能性」と呼ぶ。ここには僕たちの経験上、または僕たちの知る理論上有り得ないという事象もベイズ確率を通じて含まれる。なので明日は西から太陽が昇ったり、マグニチュード10の地震が起こったり、イエスが水をワインに変えたりすることも第二種の意味でのみ不可能なのである。

科学的な発見の多くはこの第二種の不可能性を覆すことで成されてきた。観測者の速度次第で時間の進み方がが変化するなど、アインシュタイン以前の人にとっては不可能であったに違いない。だがこの事実は例えばGPSの位置補正で今では誰もがお世話になっている。思うにこの種の不可能性を不可能的にしている大きな要因の一つは世間の思い込みである。思い込みは常識ともいう。一度可能であると分かればその分野は一気に進展する。（不可能性のレベルは落ちるが）ラインホルト・メスナーがアルパインスタイルで8000メートル峰を攻略して以来登山スタイルが変革され、100メートル走で一旦10秒の壁が破られるとそれまでの記録が嘘のように9秒台が続出し、World of Warcraftで倒せるはずがないと思われたRaid Bossが攻略されればそれに続く攻略報告が続出する。

さて本書であるが、前もって断ると、僕はこの本をAudibleで聴いただけなので細かい個所は把握していない。買い物など歩いている時に聴いているから恐らく無視できない部分を聴き落としてもいるので、曖昧な紹介になる。著者は理論物理学者であり、同型・同サイズの簡単な数種（二種？）の図形、例えば正多面体、を不規則に並べて空間を充填することが可能であることを数学的に証明した（または何かしらの革新的な仕事をした）。ここで言う不規則とは周期パターンが無いという意味である。英語ペーパーバック版表紙の模型が多分その一例だと思う。別の例では平面の充填問題になるが、中世イスラム建築のモザイク模様で二種の菱形から非周期的に構成されるものがあり、これが後にペンローズ・タイリングと呼ばれる充填法で構成されることが知られている（ペンローズとはあのペンローズである）。 5分の1回転（72度の回転）でほぼ対称になるような充填法である。（自然界には完全な5回対称は存在しないとも言っていたかも）。この「ほぼ対称性」の興味深い特徴は非局所的であるという点にもある。つまり、近隣だけを参考にタイルを張り付けても上手くいかないのである。イスラム恐るべしと言わざるを得ない。

この非周期的な三次元構造をpseudocrystal（多分日本語では擬似結晶）という。そのような鉱物は自然界にありえないというのが地質学会の常識であった。著者は数学的にあり得ると自身が証明した擬似結晶が自然界に存在することを証明するために、以降奔走することになる。一応断っておくと、前文二つ目の「証明」は第二種の不可能性の否定であり、そういうものを一つでも見つけるという行為を意味する。この追跡劇は本書の中核部分、体感で全体の約5分の3を占める。細い手がかりを辿りつつ、著者のチームは遂にカムチャッカの川床でソレを発見する。ソレは太陽系の年齢に匹敵する過去、或いはそれ以前に形成されたと推定される、外宇宙からの飛来物であった。名状し難いあの神話のようなホラー話ではない。念のため。

推理小説的な追跡劇も面白かったが、個人的に興味深かったのはやはり冒頭5分の一の、理論的研究とその解説部分、そしてラスト5分の一である。Audibleでは11時間超の最後一時間は未だ聴いておらず、どういう結末になるのかは分からない。
