石光真清の手記
石光真清は、ちょうど司馬遼太郎の「坂の上の雲」の主人公である秋山兄弟や正岡子規と同時代を生き、対ロシアの諜報活動などを行った陸軍の少佐である。彼の経験したことを詳細に残した手記は、おおよそ西南戦争からシベリア出兵まで世相が大きく動く時代を克明に記述している。自伝だからもちろんそうなのだが、これを読むと「坂の上の雲」が薄っぺらな絵空事の物語に思えるほどリアリティに溢れている。 また彼の人生を小説や映画のストーリとしてそれを表現しようとすると、逆に嘘っぽなるこほど波乱万丈であり、時代の動く現場に彼が何かしら関わり続けることが信じられないくらいである。
例えば彼は少年の際に西南戦争を熊本で経験している。この際の記述はどれも実際に経験していないと書けない生々しいものだ。薩摩軍が熊本城の堀の水を抜いていたので、魚をとったことや、政府軍が熊本での防衛戦のために市街を焼き払った際の市街の人々の避難の様子。薩摩軍が熊本城を砲撃している時の薩摩軍の炊き出しの様子や、そこでおにぎりを貰ったこと。その混乱に乗じて利を得ようとする人間の振る舞いなど、彼自身が実際に経験したことが詳細に記述される。そして驚くのはただ単に彼の記述が詳しいだけでなく、市街に住む一人の少年であったにも関わらず、政府軍の幹部、薩摩軍の幹部の双方と言葉を交わしていることだ。政府軍の幹部と接したのは、彼の父が熊本藩における識者であったからであるが、少年の彼が 戦場に出向き、薩摩軍の幹部と接触し、言葉を交わせているのは、彼の図抜けた行動力と状況の判断力、頭の良さを示す一つの出来事のように思われる。
西南戦争を何らかの形で直接的に経験した人は数十万の単位であろうが、そのうち何人が、政府側、薩摩側の幹部と言葉を交わしただろうか？ そしてそのうち何人が、それらのことを克明に記録に残しただろうか？ 真清は少年の頃から晩年に至るまで、時代の動く現場に身を置き続けた。そして、その時代の動きを的確に感じつつ、図抜けた行動力と頭の良さを発揮し続け、そこで見聞きしたこと、考えたこと、その際の判断を克明に記述し続けた稀有な人である。
有名な事件や人との直接的な関りとしては、日本でロシア皇太子が襲われた際には、天皇の近衛兵としてその見舞いに随行したり、日露戦争で軍神となった橘中佐との交友、その弔辞が書けず、軍に随行していた森鴎外に代筆を依頼したこと。日露戦争で参謀として仕えた●●将軍の生々しい言葉、ロシア革命では、とのやり取り。ちなみに叔父は軍の監視総監までなった人であり、真清の甥の子供は橋本龍太郎首相である。
また事件としては、ロシア皇帝を傷を負った際の天皇に随伴、日清戦争での台湾、ロシア革命、義和団事件、日露戦争、ロシアの内戦？シベリア出兵を全て現場で経験している。
当時の一流の人々との関わりもち、それなりに時代を俯瞰的に理解する能力のあった人間が、時代の大きなうねりの中に流されつつ懸命に生きる市井の無名の人たち生き様を事細かに記録している。このことが、私が、この本の最も価値を感じている部分だ。一兵士として果敢に戦って戦場に散っていった人の様子。ロシア軍による中国人の虐殺事件を生き延びた、日本人妻の様子、馬賊の棟梁の妻となった人の人生、ロシア鉄道の建設に携わった日本人労働者の様子、などなどなどだ。
明治という時代を懸命に生きた名もなき人々の息遣いが感じられるようです。
彼が直接的に現場で関わった事件、西南戦争、ロシア皇帝を傷を負った際の天皇に随伴、日清戦争での台湾、ロシア革命、義和団事件、日露戦争、ロシアの内戦？シベリア出兵、馬賊との関わり、

最後に息子に言う言葉が泣ける。
国のためを思い、危険を顧みずに全力で生きた頭がよい男が、人生の失敗を、息子に告げる。なんだか切ない。
この記録は絶対に将来に残すべきもの。財産だと思う。
