『ニューエクスプレス+ バスク語』を一通り読み終わって感想。
バスク語は、他のどの言語とも近縁関係が証明されない、孤立言語である。インド・ヨーロッパ語族がヨーロッパに広まる以前から現在のバスク地方(Eusukal Herria)を中心に存在したといわれる。現在バスク地方で見つかっている最古の人骨は、ネアンデルタール人のものを除けば、約一万二千年から一万四千年前の地層から見つかっており、これらがバスク人の祖先と考えられる。カエサルが『ガリア戦記』の中で記述した「アクイターニー人」との関連も指摘される。面白いのが、バスク人の自称をeuskaldunと言いい、「バスク語(euskara)の話し手」という意味である。自分たちの民族のアイデンティティとして言語が第一に来る。これは文化においても同様である。
バスク語の特徴は二点挙げられる。最初に名詞の要素における特徴であるが、その名詞の文中での役割を示すためには「格語尾」が用いられる。約15種類ほどある格のうち、絶対格(基本形、辞書に載る形でもある)、与格と能格は動詞・助動詞の活用に影響する。次に動詞・助動詞のしくみである。少数の(基本的な)動詞を除き、基本的に動詞と助動詞の組み合わせで動作が表現され、時制と法、及び文中の名詞の格がどのように組み合わされるかにより、助動詞の活用が決まる。
と簡単に書いたが、結構ややこしい。表題本を一通り読み通しただけでは記憶も理解も追いつかないので、多分もう一度読むことになる。なにせバスク語が気に入ってしまったので、もうちょっとやりたい。因みにこの本だけでは基本文法事項の3割もカバーしていないと思う。
というわけで以下の語学書を検討中。『バスク語基礎学習20週』は非常に簡素に文法をまとめた本で、マイナー言語らしく小冊子なのに値段が結構高い。付属の単語集は有り難い。これまた小冊子の、『バスク語常用6000語』(大学書林)は高額であるし、恐らく持て余す。
“The Basque Language” は英語書籍の中では高評価、値段もそれほど高くないが、大きい。持ち歩き辛いのは読む機会が減るので、ちょっと躊躇する。
