トルコのもう一つの顔
僕のkindleには手持無沙汰の時にでも読もうと購入した軽めの小説やエッセイが沢山埋まっていて、近頃はそれらを消費していた。さあ読むぞと意気込んで購入したわけではないので、読み方もいい加減である。2冊はどうにも気分が乗らなくて四分の一も読まずに投げ出し、小説1冊は下巻の半分まで読んだところで中断した。その小説は僕が近年好きな（歴史）小説家の少し前の作品である。Amazonレビューの評価はかなり低い。主要人物が良く言えば癖の強い、悪く言えば気持ち悪い人間ばかりなので、ラスト目前で「もういいか」となってしまった。そこまで読めたのは著者の文章の上手さのお蔭である。本のタイトルは言わない。外れが続いた後で読み始めたのが本書であった。何故本書を購入したか覚えていないが、多分、フィンランド語の関係書を漁っている時に、近縁の言語の一つとしてトルコ語にすこし興味を持ったからかもしれない。
著者は1970年頃の学生時代からヒッチハイクや自転車でトルコ中を旅しており、その体験談が本書で綴られる。只の旅行記ではない。著者は言語学者であり、トルコ語とトルコ周辺のマイナー言語、例えばクルド語やザザ語、の調査が目的である。が、これを公にするのは危険であり、ただの貧乏旅を装ったそうだ。装ったのは「ただの」の部分で、貧乏なのは偽りない。当時のトルコ政府は国内にトルコ人以外のマイナー民族やトルコ語以外のマイナー言語の存在を認めていなかった。
黒海周辺の民族事情は歴史的に非常に複雑なので僕は良く知らないのだが、そもそもトルコ人、或いはテュルク人というのは色んな民族の集合である。漢民族の様なものである。中央アジアに興った彼らの言語は中央アジアの幾つかの言語と近縁関係にあり、歴史的・文化的・宗教的理由によりペルシャ語・アラビア語・ギリシャ語等から強く影響を受けた。ちょうど日本語が中国語から膨大な語彙を輸入したのに似る。一方クルド人はイラン・イラク方面由来の別系統の民族であり、その言語もインド・ヨーロッパ語族でトルコ語とは系統が異なる。しかしトルコ政府の主張では、クルド人の祖先はトルコ人であり、クルド語はトルコ語の一方言に過ぎない。この主張に反する者は投獄されたり国外追放されたりしたらしい。一大勢力である彼らの民族意識を認めるわけにはいかなかったのだ。
ややこしいことに、政府が「クルド人」と見なす勢力の実態は複数の異なる民族の集合である。例えば当時「クルド」一大勢力と見なされたザザ人やザザ語はクルド人・クルド語とまた別系統であった。トルコに同化した結果、自身達の言語や由来を忘却した人々も沢山いるらしい。著者の関心はその辺にもあった。
幾ら身分を偽っても、トルコ語を流暢に喋れる怪しい外国人が辺鄙な田舎町を長年にわたってウロウロしていると、ついに身分がばれる時が来る。著者はトルコ政府からトルコの大学教授の席を世話する代わりに論文発表を控えてほしい、といった取引を躱しつつフランスへと逃れ、以降は監視下での調査のみ許される。勿論監視員の妨害も付く。且つてトルコであった昔話 (だと思う) ではあるが、同様の事態は現在でも、何処の国とは言わないが、続いている。日本で生まれ育った僕たちには意識できないが、このような政治的配慮？は日本も例外ではない筈である。
色々書いたが、本書は楽しい旅行記として、または調査旅行記として広く一般向けの内容であり、軽い読み物として強くお勧めな一冊である。なお、著者によれば本書は出版社の要請で過激な個所の削除や穏当な表現への書き直しが施されていて、元のヴァージョンが読みたければ『追補編』が出ている。
