地球に住めなくなる日 「気候崩壊」の避けられない真実
この類の本はあまり好きで無いのに、広告文句に煽られてつい買ってしまった。初めの数ページこそちゃんと読んだのだが、すぐにキーワードだけを目で追うような飛ばし読みに変更し、朝の通勤電車の精々40分そこらで見終わってしまった。つまりはその程度の内容。
本書では実に多様な分野に渡って気候変動の影響が述べられる。曖昧な言葉だけではなく、きちんとした（と思われる）数字が示される点は評価できる。だた、事実を連ねただけなので面白味がない。読者層として政治的、経済的方面に関心がある人をターゲットにしていると思われるので、これはこれで良いのかも知れない。僕としては、テーマを限定して良いからもう少し掘り下げた科学的な知見が欲しかった。数多い引用元のリストが本書自体には含まれず、原著のウェブサイトを見ろというのは余りに不親切である。問題の内容は、細かい数字はともかく、質的なことであればある程度環境問題に関心のある人なら知っている事ばかりだと思う。関心のない僕ですら得るものは余り無い。
気候のような複雑なシステムはコントロールできない。全貌が解っているわけでなく、入力に対して非線形に応答する点が厄介なのだ。このようなシステムは気候に限らず、至る所に存在する。たとえばインターネットや地震の発生プロセス。異常気象と同様に自然災害となり得る後者に関して言えば、ある種の断層活動が起これば地殻内の周囲の断層に大なり小なり応力の変化が起こる。これがそれら周囲の断層活動のトリガーとなるかもしれないのだが、予測となるとそう単純な話ではない。地震は地殻内の脆弱な部分の崩壊過程と考えられる。そこで崩壊するのは不均質な強度の岩石であり、水やマグマなどの流体も関与する。そして最も重要と思われる点は、応力変化量の近似値は推定できても、もともとの応力の相場を知る術が今のところないことだ。これが地震の予測を困難にしている(と僕は思う)。話がたいぶ逸れた。
気候は過去に平衡状態にあったとも思わないが、兎も角、従来の比較的安定な状態からシフトするトリガーは特に近代以降の加速度的な産業活動と人口増加によって既に引かれている。近年の異常気象がそれを裏付けている。恐らくこれから数十年単位で起こるかも知れない変動は過去の活動の結果なので、人間にできることと言えば、余り酷いことにならないように祈るくらいだろう。いったん中流階級となり、文明の利器を享受する生活に慣れると、もはや元には戻れない。これは個々人レベルの可能性の話ではなくてシステムとしてできない。来世紀以降も見据えるなら、現在の人口を産業革命以前のレベルに抑えるのが最も有効と思われるが、これ以上は危険な人と思われるのでここで止める。ダン・ブラウンの『インフェルノ』はそういう話だった。
本書を読んだ教訓として、すぐに改善できる悪癖が僕にはある。中身を余り調べずに、面白そうという理由で衝動的に本を買う癖である。改善できれば複数の意味で”エコ”的あろう。
