ハダカデバネズミのひみつ
1970年代、アメリカの大学教授で進化生物学者であるリチャード・アレキサンダーが、講義で当時はまだ存在が認められていなかった真社会性哺乳類について或る仮説を述べた。「真社会性は自らの巣で仔が大人まで成長し、巣の周りで餌を採れる種で進化する」、「哺乳類が真社会性を獲得するとしたら、地下に住むネズミの仲間だろう」。更に条件として、「熱帯乾燥地帯の地下にトンネルを掘って生息している」、「食性は植物の根など」と付け加えた。この聴衆の中にその条件にピッタリな動物がいることを知る人がいて、リチャード達は数年後に科学誌『サイエンス』に世界初の真社会性脊椎動物を発表した。その動物こそがハダカデバネズミであった。真社会性とは高度に分化した社会階級を持ち、特定のメンバー（ハダカデバネズミの場合は女王と王）のみが繁殖を行うような社会構造を持つ。さらに二世代以上が同居し、共同して子育てに当たる。真社会性を示す動物はアリ・ハチ・スズメバチ・シロアリなどが有名だが、他にテッポウエビも示す。脊椎動物ではハダカデバネズミのほか、近縁のもう一種が示すのみらしい。
さて、ハダカデバネズミであるが、知れば知るほど怪奇な動物（この場合は狭義の「動物」）である。まず、彼らは哺乳類の他動物に対する利点の一つでもある恒温性を捨てた。熱帯乾燥地域の地下という温度変化が比較的少ない地域に棲み、天敵も少ないからこそ可能であったのだろう。変温性になったことで体毛が不要になった。体中の弛んだ皮膚は、何かに引っかかった際に皮膚が容易に破れない為の防御策である。マスチフ、土佐犬、シャーペイなど闘犬用に改良された犬種はみな弛んだ皮膚を持っているのも同じ理由だ。彼ら（デバネズミ）は地下のトンネルを高速で走り回っているそうだ。そして土を掘るための前歯は唇を貫いて前に飛び出ているので、口に土が入ることは無い。地下への適応の結果、非常な低酸素状態での活動も可能である。
さらにこのサイズの哺乳類としては異例の長寿であり、同サイズの齧歯類の寿命が一般的に3,4年なのに対してその10倍近くの寿命を持つ。一般的な傾向として変温動物、例えば爬虫類は同サイズの哺乳類よりも長寿なことが多く、例えば手のひらに乗る程度の大きさのヒョウモントカゲモドキですら犬より長生きである。デバネズミの場合は加えてガン耐性も持ち合わせているらしい。ここでヒアルロン酸やiPS細胞というキーワードが挙がるので、興味のある人はその関連を検索してほしい。多分沢山の研究論文が有るはずだ。
役割分担がまた面白い。まず女王であるが、もちろんコロニー内で唯一生殖行動を行うメス個体である。彼女の役割はひたすら仔を産むことであり、或る特異な鳴き声を上げれば王は交尾をせずには居れなくなる。王もただ交尾をするだけであるが、これが激務なようで、数匹いる王はドンドンと痩せていくそうだ。生まれた子供は成長に伴い体の大きさによって兵隊や雑用係に分類される。兵隊は他コロニーのデバネズミと戦うほか、捕食者に立ち向かう役割が有る。捕食者は主にヘビであり、これがトンネル内に侵入してくると兵隊ネズミはただただ己の体を捕食者の前に投げ出すそうだ。戦うような無駄はしない。満腹でお帰り願う、これが役割である。
雑用係は色々と仕事が有るが、興味深いのは「ふとん係」である。気温が下がったときなど、このふとん係達は低温に弱い幼体等にどしどしと覆いかぶさって己の肉で温める。低酸素状態に抵抗が有るのでふとんに覆いかぶさられても大丈夫なのである。このように本書は単純に楽しい動物紹介本である。僕はトイレに軽く読める漫画か本を常備していて、現在は漫画『古本屋台』を置いてしばらく経つ。本書は次のトイレ本として丁度良い。
