H・P・ラヴクラフト:世界と人生に抗って
『地図と領土』『素粒子』『ある島の可能性』等で有名なミシェル・ウエルベックのH.P.ラヴクラフト論である。H.P.ラヴクラフト(以下HPLと表記する)については言うまでもないだろうが、「クトゥルフ神話」の創始者(厳密には創始者の一人)である。
本書について印象的な点を挙げと、先ずは装丁が格好良い。真っ黒なカバーにフランス語原タイトルがプリントされ、日本語訳は黒とよく合う銀色の帯の下に小さく隠れている。サイズも手に持って程よい。これだけでこの本の良さの二割を占める。次に、第二章の各サブタイトルが気が利いている。
- 晴れやかな自殺のように物語を始めよ
- 臆することなく人生に大いなる否(ノン)を宣告せよ
- そのとき、大伽藍の威容が見えるだろう
- そしてあなたの五感、いわく言い難い錯乱のベクトルは
- 完全な狂気の図式を描きだすだろう
- それは時間の名づけ難い構造のなかに迷い込むだろう
そして少しづつ、行間を埋めるようにしてHPLの作風、その世界が、偏愛を込めて語られる。「クトゥルフ神話」がどのようなものであるか、或いは何かの媒体(多くの場合、それは恐らくTRPGやアニメであろう)を通して既に断片的な知識を得てはいても、より詳しく知りたいなら一読に値する。HPLが何者で、神話はどのような時代を背景に創作されたのか、その概要が得られるだろう。既に神話世界の中毒者であるなら必読に近い。たとえ既知の事柄であったとしても、他人の意見は、それが著名人の偏愛であるなら猶更、興味深いものである。それ以外の人に本書から得るものは何もない。
本書は神話世界そのものには殆ど触れない。より詳しく神話世界を知りたい人には様々な選択肢があり、先ずは創始者自身の全集(1~7巻)。
ここには、いわゆる「神話」外の小説も含まれる。たいして面白くない短編も多く集録されていたと記憶している。注意しておくが、HPLは読みづらい。これは翻訳が悪いのではなく、英文そのものが素直でないのだ。海外の書店で原著を求めた際、書店員が曰く有り気な顔をしていたのが忘れられない。
TRPGもある。ベーシックルール(10面体サイコロ2個を使って１から100までを振り、技能などを成功判定するルール体系)を使う。写真は30年以上前のボックスセットで、今は新版が出ているはずだ。時間を持て余しているなら、正気を失いたい人たちがオンラインセッションで興じている様子をネット上で観ることができる。
神話世界の中核的作品群は漫画化されている。田辺剛が最もお勧めだが、書込みが非常に細かいので、kindle版ならパソコンの大画面で見た方がいい。ところどころ何を描いているのか分からなく、一旦焦点が定まると絵が浮かび上がる、そんな感じの絵。
Audible版のおすすめ2点。前者は50時間越え、後者も20時間強の大物。短編集なので全てを聴き通す必要はないのだが、聴き始めるには多少の覚悟と正気度がいる。
最後は、神話をめっちゃ雑に知りたい場合。あまり吟味せずに手に取ったので、数ある類書と比べてこれがお勧めかはわからない。30年くらい昔、「クトゥルフ神話」の登場人物(?)をリアル(?)なタッチで描いた、多分翻訳もののイラスト集が有って本当はそれをお勧めしたいのだが、ネットで見つからなかった。イラスト化すると恐怖は鈍るが、そもそも「クトゥルフ神話」は野暮ったい「コズミックホラー(宇宙的恐怖)」を皮肉を込めて、半笑いで楽しむものだ。
