ルドルフとノラねこブッチー
シリーズ第五巻目が何時の間にか出版されていた。前作『ルドルフとスノーホワイト』は2012年の出版なので8年ぶりである。第一作の『ルドルフとイッパイアッテナ』は1986年出版で当時僕は小学校高学年。この本の適齢期は既に過ぎていたので、名前だけは知っていたものの実際に読んだのは大人になってからである。
子供の本は好きで、今でも時折岩波少年文庫などを漁って読むのだが、このシリーズは他の名作に引けを取らない、大人が読んでも面白い本だと思う。大人の本を読むときより頭の回転を落とし、決して読み急がないように進めると良い。興奮する類の読書では決してないが、何だろう、頭の普段使わない部分がストレッチをしている感覚がある。童心がウォームアップを始めたとでも言おうか。色々と行間を想像しながら読んでも、大人であれば2時間も掛からずに終わってしまう。しかし読後の、心が少し弾む感じは同様の時間と金額で観ることのできる並の映画では得られない。
内容にあまり触れたくないので一点だけ。本の帯から、今作では半野良ネコの主人公ルドルフは仲間のブッチーと冒険の旅に出ることが分かる。が、物語の大半は其処に至る迄の経緯とその準備に費やされ、旅に出たのは最終盤になってからであった。この物語進行が絶妙で、日常的な世界をしっかりと描いているからこその楽しさがある。
