Audibleのすすめ
21世紀に入る頃から本の朗読CDを愛聴しており、数年前スマホの購入を機にオーディブル(Audible.com)を使うようになった。それまでのCD(20枚組などのボックスセット)に比べて便利な点が多く、なにより試聴できるのが有難い。決して短くない時間、例えば『赤毛のアン』で約10時間、を気持ちよく聴き通すうえで朗読者の読み方や声質は想像以上に重要であり、個人的には本の内容６に対して声４の比重で重要視している。声に関しては、CD買いの時は博打であった。
本を朗読で聴くという、読書会に於いては邪道な行為であろうが、僕はこれが好きでたまらない。頭を使わない日常の雑事の時間や、ちょっとした移動が楽しいものに変わるのである。最近は書店で面白そうな翻訳書を見つけたら、まずは原題(または英語タイトル)をメモしてオーディブルに入っているかを調べている。
さてオーディブルであるが、今年利用5年目で購入したものが200点を超えた。中にはセールス時に纏め買いしたものやシャーロックホームズ全集のように計70時間を超えるもの、『赤毛のアン』など同タイトルでも朗読者の違いで複数購入したものも含まれており、その全てを聴いたわけではない。以下に個人的に気に入っているものを幾つか紹介する。オーディブル導入以前のCDセットで購入したものも含めている。オーディブルで本を探したときにabridged版とunabridged版が見つかる場合には、要点のみを知りたいといった理由がない限り、後者を薦める。
Jurassic Park
(By: Michael Crichton, Narrated by: Scott Brick).
説明不要であろう。マイケル・クライトンの著書は総じてオーディブルと相性が良いように思える。Scott Brickは好きな読み手の一人。
Anne of Green Gables
(By: L.M. Montgomery, Narrated by: Barbara Caruso).
『赤毛のアン』は複数の出版社から出ているが、この読み手が最も好き。経歴を見る限りかなりの年配であるはずだが、彼女の読むアンに年相応の少女が思い浮かぶ。
The Order of Time
(By: Carlo Rovelli, Narrated by: Benedict Cumberbatch).
邦題『時間は存在しない』の英語版である。もとはイタリア語。物理学の門外漢にはとてつもなく刺激的な内容であり、また読み手の声が深くて落ち着いていて、ずっと聴いていたくなる。後に知ったのだが、映画ドクター・ストレンジの人であった。
Parallel Worlds
(By: Michio Kaku, Narrated by: Marc Vietor).
これも一般向けの物理学啓蒙書。内容は多岐に亘っており、その一つひとつが面白い。
Exploring J.R.R. Tolkien’s ‘The Hobbit’
(By: Corey Olsen, Narrated by: Corey Olsen).
トールキン『ホビット』の解読本であり、著者の大学講義を基にする。『ホビット』が好きな人、或いは『指輪物語』ほどは楽しめなかった人にとっても新たな発見にあふれており、再読したくなる。著者自身の朗読は気に入らないものが多いのだが、これは例外。
The Da Vinci Code
(By: Dan Brown, Narrated by: Paul Michael).
2003年、CDセットが本とほぼ同時に出版されていたと思う(記憶違いかもしれない)。
あまりの面白さに(加えて当時は暇であった)、一晩かけて聴き通した。当時は手元に当たりの朗読が少なかったので、聴いた回数は20を下らないであろう。Langdon教授の講釈が心地よい。こういうミステリーにアクション場面は蛇足だと思う。
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
(By: Roald Dahl, Narrated by: Eric Idle).
Harper Children’s Audio版の方。読み手がノリノリで非常に楽しい。現在のオーディブル版は読み手が異なり、未聴。
The Lord of the Rings
(By: J. R. R. Tolkien, Narrated by: Rob Inglis).
Rob Ignisの老いを感じさせる落ち着いた声が好きだ。特に『旅の仲間』は何度聴いたか分からない。数多い詩歌も独自の抑揚をつけて朗読される。残念ながらオーディブル(Audible.com)には入っていない。代わりにドイツ語版(Narrated by: Achim Höppner)が入手可能であり、朗読も非常に好みなので思わず購入したのだが、僕のドイツ語力では太刀打ちできない。
ハリーポッターシリーズ
Pottermoreというサイト経由でebooks(電子書籍)とaudio books(朗読)の各国語版が入手できる。朗読では2年ほど前に覗いたときにはヨーロッパの主要言語と日本語版くらいしか無かったのだが、現在は15か国語で出ており、今後ますます増えるであろう。マイナー言語学習に手を出す弾みにもなる。英語版は以前はCDセットで英国版(Narrated by: Stephen Fry)とアメリカ版(Narrated by: Jim Dale)が有ったのが、英国版のみになったようだ。僕はアメリカ版ダンブルドアの口調が好きだった。
