オーケストラー―知りたかったことのすべて
みすず書房は憎らしい。ある程度しっかりした内容の、しかし専門的過ぎない良書が並び、興味を引く本でみすず書房出版である頻度はかなり高い。装丁が(僕はこの方面のことは知らないが)綺麗に見える点もポイントが高い。でも一寸だけ値段が高すぎるように思える。例えば『アリストテレス 生物学の創造』。上下巻のそれぞれが4000円を超える。これが原著”The Lagoon”のKindle版だと1300円強で手に入る。或いは『タコの心身問題――頭足類から考える意識の起源』。3300円だが、原著”Other Mind”のKindle版だと730円だ。前者は未読だが、みすず版はカバー絵も美しく、まさに上で述べた三高を体現する本と言えるだろう。後者は文句なしに面白い。
そんな出版社の三高精神を体現する本が最近また出版された。クラシック音楽愛好者とって、オーケストラ社会の内情を知ることのできるこの手の本は貴重である。未だほんの少ししか読めていないが、内容も非常に興味深く面白い。読書が進まない理由は、本のサイズが600ページと大きく、持ち歩きたくないからだ。装丁も綺麗なので痛めたくない。そして6600円という値段に正直なところ購入をかなり躊躇った。
話題はオーケストラの入団試験や団員の生涯設計、各楽器の特徴、役割や著名な演奏者の逸話に及ぶ。例えばトランペット。この高圧的な楽器を演奏するには十分に健康な肉体が必要らしい。奏者は頑丈な唇と口輪筋で音程をコントロールし、超人的な肺活量だけでなく、腰回りの筋肉を活用して息を配分する。トランペットの三点ハ音(これが何なのかは僕にはわからない)では約25キロの圧力が頭部にかかるそうだ。弱音を安定させるのがまた困難で、極限まで筋肉をコントロールしないといけない。長い演奏では終盤、疲労がたまって筋肉が弛緩し、音が次第に大きくなる(こともある)。 指揮者から常に「強すぎる」と文句をつけられ、まったく音を出していないのにうるさいと言われることがある。 などなど。 残念な点がひとつ。僕の好きな名オーボエ奏者、ハインツ・ホリガーの名前が見つからなかった。オーケストラ奏者では無いからか。
