対談集 九つの問答
井筒俊彦は妖怪である。『コーラン』の翻訳や『イスラーム文化―その根底にあるもの』で一般に名前が知られおり、イスラム学者というのが第一の顔なのだが、彼の知性はこれに収まらない。ギリシャ哲学、仏教一般、儒教、道教、ヒンドゥー教などにも精通し、東洋哲学全体を俯瞰して位置関係を明らめ、「東洋哲学」の構築を試みる。そして、これら多方面にわたる文献を原著で読みこなす。一説には流暢に使える言語は30を超えるという。主著の大半は英語で書かれ、西洋では東洋哲学の紹介者としても知られる。司馬遼太郎は「20人分の天才」と評した。
この二人の対談は『韃靼疾風録』から始まり、井筒が修業時代に出会った二人の韃靼人(ここではトルコ人)の話になる。まだ井筒が人であった頃、当時の日本ではアラビア語の勉強が容易でなく、ようやく上野に一人タタール人が住んでいることを人づてに知る。自称100歳の長老である(正体は控える)。そして面会時、初めて耳にする古典アラビア語に喜びが抑えられず目を輝かせていたら、「お前は見所がある」と出入りを許され、以来長老宅に入り浸る生活を送り、「息子同然」となる。
ある時長老から、「日本にすごいイスラーム学者が来ているから紹介してやる」と言われ、滞在先に行く。家主が庭に回れというのでその通りにすると、庭に面した部屋には誰一人いない。「サラーム (こんにちは)」と言ってみたら、意外と近くから「アハラン ワ サハラン (よく来た)」とくぐもった声が聞こえ、押し入れの引き戸がガラッと開き、上段から大学者が這い出してきた。部屋代が払えないので押し入れに間借りしているという。
そして教えを乞うと、「イスラームでやる学問なら何でも頭に入っているから口頭で教えてやる」と答える。井筒の部屋に本が沢山あるのを見て、「何かを本格的に勉強したいなら、基本テキストをすべて頭に入れ、その上で自分の意見を縦横に動かせないといけない」と言う。「旅先でどうやって学問をするのだ」と。実際彼の頭には神学、哲学、法学、詩学、韻律学、文法学を始めとする殆どの主要なテクストが、無論イスラームの経典も併せて頭に入っていた。古来学問をするとはこういうことであった。人間を辞める覚悟が必要である。
司馬遼太郎の対談はかように面白い。いや、紹介した個所は対談とは言えないので、井筒俊彦が面白いというべきか。押し入れの下りは吹き出してしまった。本書は昨年、井筒俊彦に嵌った際に求めた本の一冊であったが、残念なことに絶版となっている。井筒俊彦との対談だけであれば、例えば『コスモスとアンチコスモス: 東洋哲学のために』 (岩波文庫)に収録されている。が、他のものも、対談者か話題のどちらかに興味があるならお勧めできる。目次を以下に挙げておく。
