言葉から文化を読む (フィールドワーク選書15)
本書は「フィールドワーク選書」という、文化人類学の研究者が自身の研究活動を紹介するシリーズの一冊である。僕は滅多に文化人類学のコーナーを覗かないので、こんな面白そうなシリーズが出ていたことを知らなかった。何冊か並んでいた中で一番興味を惹かれた巻を読んでみただわけだが、本シリーズで最も読みたい巻は別にある。シリーズ第5巻目、『人間にとってスイカと名何か (カラハリ狩猟民と考える) 』。この民族の生活に関してはずっと以前、何かのドキュメンタリー番組で見た覚えが薄っすらとある。僕の記憶が正しければ、雨季に採集したスイカを蓄えておき、乾季に水資源としてそれを少しずつ消費する。鍋のように食べていた気がする。なお、その民族の生活環境にはスイカの他に水資源は無い。これには驚愕してしまった。子供の頃は僕の両祖父母はそれぞれがスイカを栽培していて、現在売っているものほど品質の高くないスイカを嫌というほど食べたので、時間をおいてスエた匂いのするスイカが大嫌いなのだ。僕はそこでは生きていけないだろう。因みにその本の新品は現在ネット上で購入できず、中古も妙に高いので取り寄せを頼んでいるが、どうなるか。
さて本書だが、副題に「アラビアンナイトの言語世界」とある様に、アラブ遊牧民の言語文化に関する人類学的研究、アラビアンナイトを巡る比較文化研究のフィールドワークをとおして著者が何を考えてきたか、その回顧録である。研究内容の真面目な話の合間に挟まれる、ちょっとしたエピソードが興味深い。例えば冒頭、エルサレムでタクシー運転手と賃金の交渉に手間取ったお蔭でテロの爆発に巻き込まれずに済む。或いは南シナイにのみ残る、最も古いというパンの焼き方。生地を灰で覆い、熾火で焼くという。また、司馬遼太郎の『空海の風景』と陳舜臣の『曼荼羅の人』の比較もされる。前者は空海の足跡をドキュメンタリー風に描き出し、後者は空海に視点から同時代の世界を見るように書かれている。マクロな視点に対するミクロな視点。後者のように個々の日常における事実、一過性に過ぎない事実を積み上げることでしか見えてこない「歴史」を「歴史的心性」と呼ぶらしい。個々人はその時空間に共有される歴史的心性を持つようになる。その心性は次代の心性にどの様に受け継がれ、個々の人間の文化的認識はどう作用するのか、著者は地域性をひたすら探求する。
実を言うと、200ページ程度の薄い本でかつ平易な口調ながら内容が所々難しく、また雑に読んだので十分に理解できたとは決して言えない。だが、今後幾つかの読むべき本 (または読みたい本) の指針を与えてくれたという意味で有益な本であった。
