息吹 (Exhalation)

近ごろ中国人(中国系)作家によるSFが熱い。ケン・リュウの『紙の動物園』『母の祈りに』『生まれ代わり』、中国人SFアンソロジー『折りたたみ北京』、 劉 慈欣 『三体』、そして中国系アメリカ人 テッド・チャン による『あなたの人生の物語』。『三体』はエンターテイメント色の強い、ただの面白い小説だが、ここで挙げた他の作品(短編集)は傑作だと思う。『あなたの人生の物語』は数年前に映画『メッセージ』として公開され、その年の僕のNo.1映画だった。今後面白いものは、人口比を考えると、中国から来る可能性が高いと思っている。
そしてつい最近、表題作のテッド・チャン『息吹』が出た。Audibleで聴いただけだが、やはり面白い。特に「商人と錬金術師の門」と「息吹」はお勧め。後者には想像力を刺激される。
